Moʻomeheu (Culture)

Haumāna discover Moanalua Valley from the lens of the original caregivers of the ‘āina in relation to contemporary land management and monitoring practices. By the end of the program, all students will have gained knowledge on cultural significance of the site, flora and fauna of the site, as well as environmental monitoring. 

To demonstrate this knowledge, the students will develop an interpretive project to display their knowledge of the site. This interpretive project can be personal or non-personal. Upon completion of the project will students receive their certificate. This program includes bus transportation to and from the school campus and Moanalua valley (two times per cohort).

Impact:

We serve between 800 - 1300 students per school year and we are looking to expand not just the number of students we serve, but the ʻāina, wahi pana and moku we implement this program with! Haumāna are not only exited about getting their feet on ʻāina, they consistently report over a 90% increase in knowledge gained and skills earned. The Alakaʻi Program curriculum includes these core lessons:

In two years:

With funding from supporters like you, we expect to see a 30% growth in student enrollment, and the inclusion of 2 additional ʻāina education sites for haumāna to explore and practice new skills.

Funding Opportunities:

This Sustainable Community Food Systems work-based learning program nurtures our ʻōiwi Ag leaders of the future by building an understanding of local food systems, and their contribution to circular economies. Haumāna will build skills to prepare and manage ʻāina to increase food security and sustainability. They will work the land and work with community partners to build real world skills to solve real world problems.will have gained knowledge on cultural significance of the site, flora and fauna of the site, as well as environmental monitoring. 

This is a new program for MGF Hawaiʻi and the curriculum details and timing are still being discussed with partner schools. The current plan is to start in the Summer of 2025 with one school that targets their haumāna, kumu, ʻohana, alumni and broader campus community.  In the 3rd year, we will partner with the school to connect and implement parts of the program with other schools in their community, in the hopes of growing to full implementation school by school, community by community!

Year 1: Kahua (Foundation) 

• Monthly community learning opportunities.  Total 360 individuals.
• 2 Summer courses of 20 haumāna each.  Total 40 students.
• Establish a community networking group of individuals knowledgeable in any ʻāina field.  This group will be a supported resource to the students, school and community in their specific geographical area. Total 20 adults.
• Start collaboration with the UH Community Colleges to build toward a credentialed program.

Year 2: Kūkulu (Build) 

• Begin cohort of 20 students participating in a year-long program.  This program would provide a Mālama ʻĀina micro-certificate and/or college credits.  Total 20 students.
• Monthly ʻohana and community learning opportunities.  Total 360 individuals.
• 2 Summer courses of 20 haumāna each.  Total 40 students.

Year 3: Ulu Aʻe (Grow Forth)

• Continue year 2 activities.
• Expand to provide community engagement activities. 

Funding Opportunities:

• $25,000 - Fund 1 Summer Course (20 students).
• $50,000 - Fund 2 Summer Courses (40 students).
• $125,000 - Fund the creation, professional development, and management of the community ʻāina group.

For nearly 50 years, the Prince Lot Hula Festival has shared Hawaiian culture, hula, mele and ʻoli. The Ka Lei Aliʻi program takes it a step further, stringing together a lei of workshops and experiences that bring kamaʻāina and malihini together to learn about our Aliʻi, the culture they built, and the ʻāina they entrusted to our care. It reminds us all of the kuleana we share and must continue to work together to uphold so that Hawaiian stories, our culture and our people continue to thrive here at home! This program contributes to the Kanaka economy by hiring Kanaka Kumu Hula, musicians, and lecturers. We contribute to the tourism economy by booking venues in the tourism industry, marketing those venues along with the program, and purchasing food and/or snacks through those venues.

6 Workshops will use mele and moʻolelo to:

• Increase general knowledge of the history of Hawaiʻi.
• A basic understanding of the effects of Tourism on ʻāina and in our communities.
• Build understanding and basic skills of mālama ʻāina.
• Learn basic cultural protocol when visiting ʻāina in general and wahi pana specifically.

1 Festival will use hula, cultural demonstrations & mini-lectures to:

• Increase understanding of Hula as a crucial means of oral transmission of knowledge.
• Increase understanding of the cultural significance and modern-day application of practices such as kuʻi kalo, lauhala weaving, lei making, kapa making and more.
• Increase understanding of the difference between practicing a culture and cultural appropriation.

In three years: 

We are building toward a Prince Lot Hula Convention for our 50th-annual Festival. Each year we will add components of the proposed convention until its full implementation in 2027. The Convention will be a 2-day event, that will include two times the hālau that currently perform (12), cultural workshops, hula lectures, lessons and activities, and more!
